Expert Scientific Advisory Panel

CHFA is pleased to announce our new Expert Scientific Advisory Panel.

The mandate of the panel is to provide CHFA with expert scientific advice on issues relevant to the natural and organic products industry in Canada. Professionals on ESAP may be invited to respond to journalists from time to time and/or provide advice to CHFA on how to respond to such matters.

CHFA’s ESAP is comprised of professionals that are experts in their respective fields with interests in the natural and organic products industry.


Dr. Peter Jones

Dr. Peter Jones received his B.Sc. degree in Biochemistry and a M.Sc. in Human Nutrition at the University of British Columbia. He completed his Doctorate in Nutritional Biochemistry at the University of Toronto in 1985.  After two years with the Clinical Nutrition Research Center at the University of Chicago as a Medical Research Council of Canada postdoctoral fellow, he spent several years on faculty with the Division of Human Nutrition at University of British Columbia.  Dr. Jones was Director of the School of Dietetics and Human Nutrition at McGill University from 1994-1999; was a Professor in the school and was holding a cross-appointment in the Department of Medicine until 2005.  Dr. Jones was named Canada Research Chair in Functional Foods and Nutrition and joined the University of Manitoba on November 1, 2005 as Director of the Richardson Centre for Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals.  His main appointment is in the department of Food Science with a cross appointment in Human Nutritional Sciences.

Currently, Dr. Jones serves as President of the Danone Institute for Nutrition in Canada and as Founding President of the Cooperative for Advancement of Plant Sterols in Canada (CAPSIC).  He serves as Chairman of the Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals Board of the Vancouver-based Forbes Medi-tech group.  Dr Jones also has sat on the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, World Health Organization, and United Nations University (FAO/WHO/UNU) Expert consultant Panel for Energy and Protein Requirements in Human Nutrition.  Dr. Jones has served on national grant review committees including Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and Heart and Stroke as well as on Editorial Boards for journals including the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and Nutrition Reviews

Dr Jones' research interests cover cholesterol, fat and energy metabolism.  Dr Jones has published over 250 peer-reviewed research articles and reviews in international journals, as well as chapters in leading nutrition textbooks. Dr. Jones received the Young Investigator Award for Excellence in Nutrition Research in 1997.

Dr. Ron Puhky

Dr. Ron Puhky received his medical degree at McGill University in 1971. In 1976 he co-founded the Victoria Holistic Health Centre and began studying acupuncture in the UK and subsequently in China. He was a founding member of the American Holistic Medical Association in 1978, and of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture. He has been a visiting lecturer in the UCLA Medical Acupuncture program, and is the co- director of the Five Element Acupuncture Training Program in San Diego, now in its 20th year. From 2004 to 2006 he was the president of the Association of Complementary and Integrative Physicians of BC.

 

Ron has written and taught extensively about how to reactivate the healing response in individuals facing critical illness, and is now a medical staff member at InspireHealth.  His special interest over the years has been the integrated care and support of individuals with cancer. Ron also continues his practice on Salt Spring.  Deeply committed to the natural environment and its critical importance for all healing, he has lived on and operated with his family a certified organic farm on Salt Spring Island since the mid-1970s.


Shawn O'Reilly

Ms. Shawn O'Reilly is the Executive Director and Director of Government Relations for the Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors (CAND). Ms. O’Reilly will act as a liaison contact for the Expert Scientific Advisory Panel and will assist in providing Naturopathic Doctors to assist the panel in its work, when required.

 

Ms. O'Reilly has been involved in the field of natural medicine for over 15 years holding senior positions with two of Canada's professional line nutraceutical companies and a holistic compounding pharmacy prior to joining the CAND in 2002. Previously, Ms. O'Reilly spent 17 years as a senior litigation law clerk and Law Clerk Manager for several top Canadian law firms.
